Step 1: pick an hour

Decide on a date, time, and place. Stressful things like death make our brains mush. We have trouble concentrating and thinking clearly. To write a eulogy, you will need to set aside the time.

Set. It. Aside. Now.

STEP 2: the voice

Select tone and style. Were they quiet, religious, or known for their inappropriate jokes? If you can’t decide, weren’t very close, or had a difficult relationship with them, use your own writing style or voice. Voice. Tone. Style.

STEP 3: Tell A STORY

Did they tell a story over and over again? This can be any story… adventure, loss, fear. Is there a story others tell about this person? Is there a really special memory you have?

Tell. The. Story.

Step 4: their essence

You’ve told them THE story. Now, interpret it for them by describing the person’s admirable characteristics. Did they have a sense of adventure or kind spirit? What did you learn from them?

STEP 5: Offer comfort

Is there a quote that can offer comfort to those left behind? If the eulogy style is humorous, consider telling a joke. Express gratitude to the audience.

You. Did. It.
